40 miles of unforgettable food

I recently spent a morning by a beautiful canal, tasting local food, cooked up by a chef/comedian - someone’s got to do it! The occasion was the launch at Owd Nells, Guys Thatched Hamlet of new offers for visitors to the Lancaster Canal. If you get yourself down to the Lancaster Canal and surrounding area you can take advantage of 20% off at some of the best eateries around who hold the Taste Lancashire accreditation!

The list includes four charming Mitchells pubs, Barton Grange Hotel’s Walled Garden Bistro and a new addition to the Taste Lancashire scheme, Barton Bangla Brasserie, which offers Tandoori, Mughlai and Bengali dishes amongst the variety of classic Indian food.

At the launch local chef and food advocate, Philippa James, cooked up some bite size treats using mainly ingredients from food producers along this beautiful 40 mile stretch of water and here’s a flavour: Lancashire tortilla with Dewlay’s crumbly Lancashire cheese, mini butterfly cakes with Pennine Way Preserves Lemon Cheese, Gracemire Lamb with rosemary, Lancashire honey and garlic and my personal favourite, Port of Lancaster Smokehouse mackerel with a splash of vodka! The coffee on arrival was provided by J Atkinsons and Co from Lancaster.

I only live a couple of minutes walk away from the Lancaster Canal in Preston (through Haslam Park) and whenever we get a sunny evening it’s great to go for a wander. Hoping to arrange a bike ride up to Garstang and back one weekend so we will definitely be taking advantage of one of the 20% off feals to keep the energy levels up!
