Not Just 9 - 5!

My job isn’t 9-5 and no two days are ever the same. I could be dealing with the everyday running of the museum one moment and then helping to plan a special event the next.  That’s the great thing about working in a building like Towneley Hall – we have so much going on from one day to the next. In recent history Towneley Hall was used as a film location for the TV series Casanova staring David Tennant and has also hosted the Most Haunted programme. So there is plenty to keep me busy!

Oh how I love HotShot days. The anticipation of what I’m having for dinner that evening keeps my taste buds alive all day. Tonight’s feast at The Penny Street Bridge Hotel, Lancaster features pan-fried scallops and venison fillet. Will I be able to wait until 7.30? The young chef cooking his own design menu is 24 year old Scott. It’s not too late for you to join me and offer him your support. At a cost of £15 per person it’s a real bargain.

Who said working in a Museum was boring?

Museum life is always exciting at the start of a new season. A thorough spring clean means that everything gets moved and creates the space to set out all the exhibits in new and interesting settings.

We have 63 vehicles ranging from a little three wheel Ant truck to the mighty 100 tonner Scammell; vans, trucks, buses, and a traction engine that all need cleaning and polishing, not to mention having all the mechanical bits fettled.

If you enjoy cleaning your car windows, just imagine cleaning 78 pieces of glass on a double-decker bus!  Six vehicles join the exhibition this year and all have had to pass muster before being allowed into the Museum. 

Our Virtual Trip Around Lancashire

Here in the office in the comfort of our chairs we have been visiting the lovely sites of Lancashire virtually! We aren’t saying that this is better than visiting the real thing but hey it’s still fun and it is all courtesy of Google Street View!
 
Whilst on our virtual travels we have visited many famous Lancashire landmarks including Lytham Windmill, the Inn at Whitewell, the Eric Morecambe statue. We even climbed Jeffrey Hill, Forest of Bowland!

Mitton Hall Hotel’s Mothering Sunday Special

The splendour of Mitton Hall Hotel lying on the banks of the River Ribble at Great Mitton was the venue for our Mothers day lunch.  After a refreshing pint of Bowland Real Ale in the lounge bar with ornate wooden carved wall we walked through the Great Hall, the building’s centre piece with its panelled gallery, beamed ceiling and magnificent fireplace to the hotel’s restaurant. 

Working at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery - Stephanie Murfin

I came to the Harris in November last year to work specifically on the Industrial Revolutionaries exhibition open at the Harris  from 26th June to 6th November 2010. My job involves historical research, creating fun activities for the exhibition and organising a programme of events for the duration of the exhibition. The thing I love most about my job is working in the stunning Grade I listed Neo-Classical building with some fascinating collections. I have the opportunity to work with a variety of different people within the Harris including the library staff, specialists and education team.

Here at LBTB we’ve accepted the challenge to see how far the guide can travel with us in 2010. We’ve already got great plans for our little guide’s journey across the globe... in the sea on our summer hols, with our aunty in Oz, in a mud-filled field at a festival...you get the idea.
