I’ve just returned from 10 days in the Dordogne region of France and was impressed by 2 things - the variety and quantity of the local produce markets and their efforts regarding the environment and plastic bag use.
We had always intended to visit at least 1 of the local food markets, but we ended up visiting loads by accident, simply because there were so many of them. Even the tiniest of villages took pride in its weekly food and drink trading day, where the products ranged from cheese you could smell from the next village at 45 euro per kg, live chickens whose legs had been snapped to prevent them running away before they were bought and a dizzying variety of herbs and dried fruits. I was struck, not only by the quantity of the markets, but by how well-attended they were by the locals. The other thing which impressed me on this visit was the scale of the use of large reusable plastic bags. Men, women, young, old, all had these reusable bags at the markets and even in the supermarkets. There were no thin, throw-away plastic bags for anyone to take copious amounts of. A good example and one which I will certainly be following from now on.
