Saturday evening saw me driving up the Fylde coast to pay a long overdue visit to Seniors Fish & Chip restaurant in Thornton. After an obilgatory glance at the upturned hull of Riverdance on the beach at Cleveleys we headed inland to the award-winning restaurant and self styled "Fish Experience".
We didn't need much convincing to opt for the restaurant speciality of battered John Dory and chips which arrived very promptly to our restaurant booth. Somehow a glass of Chardonnay wasn't out of place and made me feel very decadent! The John Dory was very tasty, the batter extremely light - great fish and chips as they should be - We will definitely be back to try some of the other great fish on the menu.
I have been quite spoilt this weekend as I was invited to attend the Lancashire Cheese Makers Association meeting at the Three Fishes on Friday. Nigel Haworth (owner and chef-celeb) hosted the meeting and lunch which reinforced his commitment of using local Lancashire produce at all of his establishments.
The seven Lancashire cheesemakers (third or fourth generation cheesemakers in most cases) are working together to promote and protect Lancashire cheese. Their knowledge and passion for Lancashire cheese is a great asset to the region and its fantastic to hear them talk about the product. They are in the process of visiting a number for Booths supermarkets to do demonstrations and talks about Lancashire cheese - watch this space.
For lunch I tucked into Farmer Sharp's herdwick Mutton pudding which was like taking a bite into my childhood (it reminded me vividly of my grandmothers cooking). I just about managed to finish but this didn't leave a lot of room of the award-winning 'Length of Lancashire Cheese Board' featuring 10 different Lancashire cheeses. It was voted Best British Cheese Board in 2006 and it's well worth the experience if you still have the room.
