Where to go for Father's Day lunch was the dilemma... The Ship at Elswick the solution. Chosen from our yummy list of Taste Lancashire accredited restaurants, and one that I hadn't tried before (or known anyone else to). Was it a gamble that paid off?
Ringing on Friday I didn't really have a chance of booking a table; they were full. But a call on Saturday morning to tell me that they could fit in my booking for 5 at 5pm made my day - and gave me hope in the form of excellent customer service!
Right from the warm welcome stepping through the door this was somewhere great. The decor, the staff, the menu and of course the company I had. It's so great to impress the parents right from the off - they had never been to Elswick and thought it was a beautiful village.
We started with fish cakes, ribs and prawn cocktail (for the traditional English food eating partner I have, the menu was perfect). Beautiful scrumptious fishcakes and VERY filling, washed down with some Fentimanns Dandelion and Burdock set me up for my mains of a Sunday Roast. I had a worthy 13 year old competitor - who could eat the most of our fabulous roast dinner? I managed more of the parsnips but he beat me hands down on the roast spuds! Him indoors blasted through his gammon and pineapple and then we all realised that we sadly had no room for dessert!
Deservedly a holder of the Highest Quality Taste Lancashire award and a big thumbs up from the Redford/Lundy trip. I'll be back very soon for the soup or the risotto, the steak or the fish pie or the burger and I WILL be leaving room for at least a cheesecake.
Thanks to all at The Ship for exceeding expectations - long may she sail.
