Afternoon tea is a very civilized affair and what better place to ‘take tea’ than in the glorious Art Deco surroundings of the Midland Hotel in Morecambe. The fact that is was also Valentine’s Day added to occasion and so we took our seats in one of the cosy booths of the Rotunda cafe.
The architecture of the Midland might well hark back to the glory days of the 1930’s but the hotel’s approach to afternoon tea was very much 21st Century, with a long oblong plate laid out with tasty goodies. Presumably laid-out in the order of suggested consumption we greedily tucked into the following; A small selection of finger sandwiches, fruit cake, two biscuits, a large scone with thick cream and jam and finally, a deliciously decadent profiterole crammed full of cream and glistening with dark chocolate. Oh and I nearly forgot the pot of tea....
Needless to say we practically rolled out of the Midland and onto the promenade. The walk along the jetty, admiring the bird sculptures of the TERN project, was much needed.
Earlier in the day we had made a detour into Lancaster to visit the Maritime Museum (situated on the Quay side and a very short walk from the shopping area) – which was well worth the £3 entry. Very interesting displays on Lancaster’s and the surrounding areas maritime history that has included slavery, fishing, the treacherous tides and quick sand of Morecambe Bay and finally tourism!
