Thanks to it being my brother’s birthday I managed to sample some of Lancashire’s great food over the past week!
Celebration, part one was a visit to The Millstone at Mellor. We arrived just at the right time – in between the lunch and evening meal crowds, so we had the pick of where to sit in the bar. After getting comfy and having a look at the seasonal menu and specials board I decided on the Seabass dish with Chorizo, vegetables and salsa – absolutely delicious.
It was the perfect light meal for a sunny Saturday afternoon…especially as we were going to be dropping into Huntley’s Farm Shop on the way home to pick up some treats for a BBQ later that evening! Other dishes devoured by my family included the ever-popular Fish & Chips and a gigantic Chicken Caesar Salad, followed by Sticky Toffee pud and Crème Brulee…yum!
On the way home we popped into Huntley's of Samlesbury to pick up our BBQ bits which included some spicy beef skewers and wild boar sausages (all reared just down the road), as well as the obligatory Moo 2 You ice cream in Raspberry Ripple flavour for afters! My mum, a first time visitor to Huntley’s, picked up some venison meat which she told me made a delicious casserole later in the week.
Then for celebration part two yesterday, we headed to The Fence Gate Inn just over the Pendle border. We chose to have a bar meal rather than the bistro and found our selves a cosy corner. As we’d heard all about the famous sausages (made in their very own sausage factory), my brother’s girlfriend decided on the Tomato and Chilli combo with chips. My brother and the rest of our party all couldn’t resist the Sunday Lunch with either beef or lamb. They all agreed the gravy was some of the tastiest they’d had in a long time! As I wanted to leave room for a pudding I’d already spotted on the menu, I decided on a prawn sandwich with some home-made chunky chips on the side (which actually filled me up more than expected!). But, I still managed to make room for the Chocolate Fondant with white chocolate ice cream and raspberry & pomegranate sauce. I can’t even describe in words what chocolate heaven this was! Worth every naughty calorie that came with it! My dad had the mango panacotta complete with fresh mango pieces in the bottom and my brother’s girlfriend managed to fit in a delicious Pear Crumble Tart with Almond Ice Cream. It’s true to say we were all full to the brim as we headed home for a well deserved Sunday evening nap!!
