As we awaited a tram to take us into Blackpool we could see it was busy! Three trams passed, full to capacity so eventually settled for a bus to get us to the Promenade. This was going to be a busy day – and it was too. As we approached the main stretch of the Promenade we literally saw a sea of faces. Never in all my years have I seen Blackpool Promenade so busy and the reason, the airshow.
A glorious day, a fantastic vantage point on the new Promenade and a good line up of display aircraft too – looks like everyone else had the same idea. So we settled down on the Promenade Spanish steps between central and south pier to watch two hours of flying displays and what an afternoon it was.
We saw a range of helicopters (Sea King and Huey) , a huge American KC135 refuelling aircraft, the Guinot wing walker biplane and of course the show finale – the one and only Red Arrows who were spectacular as usual. However, for me, without doubt the star of the show by far was the mighty Vulcan bomber. It was on the way back to its base from a display up the coast in Whitehaven but was able to do a quick flypast or two, but I think everyone else felt the same, as this aircraft has been the subject of a near 20 year restoration project and is the only one flying. Huge cheers and a round of applause when it first appeared to the right above North Pier and as it did its first flypast. Blimey – what a noise!
The whole event was brilliant, thoroughly enjoyed by my clan and everyone else too and can’t wait for next years event. Blackpool at its very best.
