Finally a week of summer weather! My partner and I have been dying to get out into the fresh air without the threat of a thunderstorm for ages, so when we heard that Wednesday was going to be sunny and rain free we decided to pack up a picnic and head for the coast.
When I visit Blackpool for a wander I always tend to head into town so this week we decided to discover the beach south of Blackpool. After picking up some yummy treats on my way home from work we jumped in the car and we were on our way. I always forget how close Preston is to Blackpool so before we knew it we’d parked up at Starr Gate (great, only 70p for 3 hours!).
As we headed down the slope we couldn’t believe how far the beach stretched! The tide was right out and all you could see was golden sand for miles with the glittering sea on the horizon! Brilliant!
It’s been ages since I’ve walked bare foot on a beach so I couldn’t wait to get my shoes off as we walked along to find the ‘perfect picnic spot.’ As there wasn’t the usual Blackpool breezy weather we picked a spot right in the middle of the beach. Perfect for watching the sun go down over the horizon. I couldn’t get over how peaceful it all was! The odd jogger by, or person walking their dog and families playing down at the water’s edge, but that was it!
After we’d devoured our sarnies and other treats we headed down to the sea for a paddle and even encountered a local fisherman on his boat dropping his friend off on the way home. Looking back to shore, we could see the resort stretching out before us and it really does give you a different perspective on Blackpool.
Such a great way to wind down after a day at work and it definitely blew the cobwebs away. Just wish I could do it every day!

This part of the coastal spread is fantastic, just like the sweeping sands at Formby down the coast. Huge wide open beaches, sand dunes and sand yatching - you'd never realise that bustling Blackpool was just around the corner. Certainly a good bit of coastline for a bit of quiet R and R, so don't tell everyone.
