Friday night was our Tourist Board Christmas 'do'. We move around Lancashire for our annual party so that we can experience what the different places have to offer. 2008 was Kwizeen in Blackpool, 2007 was The Millstone at Mellor, 2009 was to be The Borough in Lancaster.
We started off in The Sun Inn for a couple of drinks. A warm welcoming atmosphere in this cosy pub. Full of revellers in sequins and warm coats it set us off in a great mood. As we moved to The Borough across town the weather was a bit icy and slippy underfoot for the array of towering-heeled party shoes but we all made it safely.
Once esconced in our seats it was straight into the starters. The chicken liver pate went down a storm around me and I had slight food envy until I tucked into my prawn cocktail - yum! The Borough was buzzing with christmas parties of various sizes and conversation was flowing well. 3 ladies from the same group behind us were having a laugh as they had all turned up in the same top!
The mains looked spectacular. Full sea bass was my choice and I washed it down with the wine that was flowing well. The turkey from all reports was succulent and again I got food envy at the sight of the beef stew. All hail to the chef who turned out magnificent food on a really busy night that was still the very high standard we have come to expect and love here.
By the time dessert landed we were all feeling really full but the dark chocolate torte sucked me in! A great end to a great meal and time to move on to Penny Street Bridge. The drinks flowed and fun was had by all.
What a great place for a night out. It was my first night in Lancaster for over a decade and I was really impressed with the atmosphere of the city and the quality of the places we visited. I stayed over at The Royal Kings Arms which made my evening complete.
Unfortunately I had to leave early the next morning but if I was you I'd get yourself a city break here. Do some shopping at Lancasters many independent shops. Grab a coffee and cake from one of the amazing cafes and visit the Castle and the other museums. Finish off with a visit to Dukes Theatre.
Don't forget that Lancaster is home to the Northwest's best Bed and Breakfast of 2009 - The Ashton. Collecting accolades left right and centre it has recently made it into the Guardian's Top Hotels of the DECADE! and truly is a destination B&B. Enjoy the destination.
Merry Christmas and roll on 2010 for staycation and daycations galore.

Just wanted to back Sarah up on her impression of Lancaster. The atmosphere was great all night. I only live down the road in Preston and wish I made the journey up the motorway much more. The shops are aplenty and the food in the many pubs n cafe's is always delicious.
The Borough is definitley becoming one of my favourites with its tasty traditional dishes. I'll definitely be returning in the new year.
