Blue skies and sunshine were the order of the day as my family and I joined the thousands of others heading towards Blackpool’s South Promenade for the annual air show. After finding a space to sit on the new Spanish steps just past Central Pier, we settled down to watch what was to be an amazing range of flying displays.
As expected the crowd pleaser was actually the finale performed by the world famous and totally amazing RAF Red Arrows. Plumes of coloured smoke in the sky became an image of a red heart with an arrow through it, preceded by a replica of the Pleasure Beach’s own big dippers. Crossing each other’s paths, far too close for comfort, had many around me gasping in awe or, like me, covering their eyes!
I had two personal favourites on the day. The first was the Spitfire, Hurricane and Bomber, all flying alongside each other. I had never appreciated the difference in size between these planes before now or how large the bomber actually is. What a sight they must have been as they flew over the south coast of England during the war. My other favourite were the wing walkers. With one plane inverted above the other I thought they were actually holding hands, they were so close together.
With a Lancaster PA474, a Jet Provost mk5 and a Hawker Hunter XE685 to keep the enthusiasts happy, once again Blackpool produced a world class event and all for free.
