Tuesday evening saw my twelve year old son and I take to our bikes along with another 12,000 equally energetic souls to hit Blackpool’s world famous promenade for the annual Ride the Lights event. For one night only six miles of Blackpool’s seafront is closed to traffic and pedal power takes over whilst the illuminations are given a proper test run before the big switch on (someone called Robbie Williams is doing it this year!)
The weather was perfect, not a breath of wind to be had and this year we managed to cycle the whole twelve miles – six there and six back! Along the way we some familiar faces including Claire Smith from the Number One on her illuminated bike and my work colleague Tim with his family.
Many of the bikes were adorned with their own illuminations and as this years ride was part of the Sky Ride cycle event most people stopped to collect a high viz jacket. With free bike checks and a myriad of other giveaways to take advantage of we completed the ride in less than two hours and all without spending a penny. Not many times you can say that.
In my mind it really is one of the best events held in Blackpool – roll on next year.
