After the over indulgences of Christmas we were desperate for some fresh air and a good walk. We didn’t want anything too taxing but I was keen to explore somewhere new. The two mile Darwen Tower walk (found in the walks under 5 mile section on our website) seemed the perfect solution, especially as I’ve passed it so many times on the M65. So we set off to Sunnyhurst Wood (in between Blackburn and Darwen) to start our walk.
We parked on the road outside the park and followed the trail down through the park, past intriguing Victorian architecture and bridges, along a babbling stream and out of the woods up to the reservoir (I was glad I’d worn a hat at this point as it was quite breezy). The path then took us up to Darwen Tower and then back into the wood. It was a perfect circular route, not too strenuous (with only a few inclines to tackle) and was long enough to work up an appetite. I’d certainly recommend wearing wellies or other shoes you don’t mind getting muddy.
The second reason for choosing this walk was the fact that it was only a 10 minute drive from the Clog and Billycock in Pleasington where we headed for a late lunch. For starters I chose the sublimely delicious Bob Kitchen’s Organic Day Old Lancashire Curd on a buttered Crumpet with Ashcroft’s Beetroot & Mustard Cress Salad (A very delicious version of cheese on toast!), followed by Seabass (on the specials menu). My husband tucked into warm Morecambe Bay Shrimps on a buttered crumpet followed by a very substantial Cheese and Onion pie filled with Leagram’s Organic Tasty Lancashire & Curd Cheese. All very yummy and very much enjoyed after our short walk.
