With a spare weekend available and a love for all things outdoors, we recently decided to do a bit of ‘glamping’ here in Lancashire. Glamping offers many of the home comforts, whilst still enjoying an outdoors experience. Box Tree Farm was the chosen destination for our weekend in the village of Wennington, nestled between Hornby and Low Bentham, in the beautiful Lune Valley.
Box Tree Farm offers eleven pods in a secure country environment with plenty of parking, children’s play area, toilet block and a chance to meet the owners ponies and even help with grooming them. Our own pod was well equipped with a small kitchen area, oven, sink, kettle microwave and was really airy and spacious. At night it was so easy to transform the pod from a living space to a sleeping space and being well in the countryside we had two fantastic night’s sleep. I would imagine on a clear night which alas eluded us, that the star gazing would be very rewarding.
Nearby we visited the towns and villages of Kirkby Lonsdale, Wray, Hornby and Caton and stopped off at nearby Ireby Green Café for coffee and home-made cake. This relatively new café is located on a dairy farm, just off the A65 and is well worth a visit, and most of the produce is locally sourced and high quality and owner Sylvia is building up a good following. We opted for homemade Lemon polenta cake as well as homemade chocolate brownies – highly recommended, and we were advised that if we wished to dine there for Sunday lunch, booking is advised - such is demand. To burn off the cakes we went for a twenty minute stroll around a farm walk that they have developed on-site offering beautiful views over the Lune Valley.
We chose to glamp it up as much as we could so opted to cook and use the facilities at Box Tree Farm itself as much as possible, but if you fancy a meal out you’re spoilt for choice with the Castle Inn at Hornby, The Fenwick at Claughton or The Highwayman to name but a few. On Sunday morning we opted for a hearty breakfast using fresh free range eggs from the neighbouring farm and ate outside to the sound of sheep, swallows and tractors.
All in all a fantastic weekend, which didn’t break the bank and would certainly recommend giving glamping a go if you haven’t done so already – we’re already planning our next trip!
