There’s free entry for all at the Museum of Lancashire, Preston; Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston; Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery; The Whittaker Museum, Rawtenstall and Samlesbury Hall, nr Preston. Kids go free to most of the museums listed here – including Helmshore Mills Textile Museum, Clitheroe Castle and Lancaster Maritime Museum.
3. Great range of family events
Outdoor theatre, themed kids workshops, specialist exhibitions, arts & crafts… there’s loads to choose from. Look out for Kid Activity Tours throughout the summer holidays at Lancaster Castle, The History of Lego exhibition at the Judges’ Lodgings in Lancaster and Summer Holiday Craft Workshops at Queen Street Mill Textile Museum, Burnley. Samlesbury Hall near Preston also has re-enactments at their Samlesbury Skirmish event 30-31 August.
4. Inspirational Stories
The Museum of Lancashire in Preston celebrates the achievements of famous Lancastrians and the hidden stories of Lancashire folk past and present who have helped to shape the county. From comedian Les Dawson to Sir Richard Owen, the man who coined the word dinosaur (Greek for terrible lizard) and who established the Natural History Museum in 1881, you’ll discover many different inspirational stories at each of our museums.
5. Passionate curators and tour guides
Joining a guided tour or specialist talk can often be the best way to discover more about an exhibition or building. The guided tour at Lancaster Castle holds the Visit England ‘Best Told Story’ accolade, which is an honour awarded for “particular innovative and effective interpretation or tour, telling the story to capture visitors imagination”, they are also running special ‘kids’ tours throughout the summer, suitable for the under 12s.
