Bank holiday Monday saw a number of Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board staff head to Clitheroe Castle to help out at the Guiness World Record attempt for the largest simultaneous picnic across 100 different sites in the UK. The national event was part of National Families Week.
With the sun shining we knew it was going to be a great day…but would anybody turn up??? Registration started at 12 noon and before we knew it we were bombarded with families ready to sign up and sit out in the glorious sunshine with their picnic!
The rules stated that everybody must sit down and eat their picnic together at 1pm. This was going to prove a challenge for any early arrivals, so we arranged for the local town crier to come along and signal the start of the picnic by ringing his bell.
So, how many people did we manage to sign in? After a frantic count up, there was a total of 917 names. A great success!
The previous record held was for 8,000 people….so had we helped to beat this number? Well, at the last count, the National Families Week website had recorded a whopping 14,000 picnickers. A new world record!
A great big thank you to anybody that came along on the day and helped us to create this new world record!
