Last month the Tourist Board invited food writers from national and regional media to visit Pennine Lancashire and experience Lancashire food in all its forms. We took them to restaurants in the Taste Lancashire quality scheme, introduced them to our idiosyncratic and entertaining producers, gave them a taste for some of the best real ale in the country and even sent them home with one of Bob’s Knobs from Leagrams Cheese!
We were lucky enough to attract journalists writing for such titles as Virgin Train’s Hotline Magazine, Observer, Evening Standard, Guardian, Daily Mail, Easyjet, Good Motoring and myhospitality.com.
All those who came on the visit thoroughly enjoyed the trip and most if not all admitted that it had changed their preconceived ideas about Lancashire. Although there are still many mills to be seen on the skyline, these are surrounded by beautiful countryside and several, such as Helmshore Mills, have been turned into living museums. But I would rave about the area, having chosen to live here instead of my native Northern Ireland and working for an organisation whose remit is to encourage others to visit this wonderful county. So, for a view which is less biased but just as enthusiastic, it’s probably best to read the account of one of the visiting journalists, Carol Garrington from the website written by parents for parents, havealovelytime.com.
