A quiet weekend meant me and my partner John found ourselves with a free Sunday afternoon, so with the sun shining we decided to head up the road to Guys Thatched Hamlet and Owd Nells Tavern for some traditional Sunday grub. Yum!
It turned out that everyone else seemed to have had the same idea so we were worried we might have a bit of a wait. But we were pleasantly surprised when we were shown straight to a table in a quite sunny corner of the tavern! I’d heard great things about the Lasagne so my choice was easy. And after some careful deliberation, John decided to tackle the fish and chips (sorry cheap joke)! The best part was saving 20% on the food bill by using the special offer voucher from visitlancashire.com (see the page in the food and drink section about eating along Lancaster Canal).
While waiting for the food to arrive we noticed that during a couple of weekends in October there’s an Oktoberfest festival going on (we’d just missed special celebration nights on the Friday and Saturday). Speciality German beers and food were on the menu and there is another celebration weekend planned for the 30 and 31 October. So much going on! In fact there was still a large marquee set out on the patio with some very traditional (and slightly amusing) German style music coming from it...
When the food arrived we definitely weren’t disappointed. The reviews about the Lasagne were spot on. It was delicious! John’s fish was gigantic and really well cooked with real home-made chips and mushy peas to boot. Scrummy! The plan was to then get an ice cream from the parlour and wander along the canal, but we were far too stuffed to eat another scrap, so instead we finished off our drinks and sat in the sun by the canal trying to decide, if we were to give everything up and live life along the canal and which boat would suit us! I chose a very smart looking, long, black canal boat sat proud just outside the tavern. I think that would do me just fine!
We then headed on up the canal in the Lancaster direction and found that we soon came out at the marina at Barton Grange Garden Centre. We couldn’t believe how close it was. We didn’t go in but definitely plan to next time we get chance. You really could just eat your way along the Lancaster canal!

Sounds great! I went to Barton Grange Garden Centre last week, they've already got an excellent Christmas section!
