It’s a rare event; an annual pilgrimage; an experience passed from one generation to the next. The Dukes’ walkabout performance is here again, to be precise for the 24th year running and this year it’s Peter Pan.
The production itself was beautifully crafted moving from the Darling household, where Peter Pan first appears to Wendy and teaches her to fly, to Neverland and the Lost Boys with the first half concluding in a spectacular scene of mermaids, bubbles and pirates on the lake. Each scene delighting young and old, who de-camp enthusiastically to each location with their fold out chairs, rugs and in some cases very full picnic baskets!
For our party it was back to the Ashton Memorial, taking in the spectacular sights across Morecambe Bay towards the Lake District, as the sun started to set on this spectacular natural backdrop.
After the interval, the crowds made their way deep into the woods where they were treated to a peak inside the home of the Lost Boys. There, the simple pleasures of life with their new ‘mother’ Wendy soon turn fractious as she and her brothers Michael and John yearn for home, while the distant sounds of battle between Captain Hook and Tiger lily’s tribe warn of more serious business ahead!
Now, I’m not going to spoil it for you – needless to say we had a fabulous evening and will be telling all our friends to go and see it. The very young and the ‘young at heart’ just love Peter Pan and this brilliant outdoor production brings to life the original J.M.Barrie spirit, who first conceived of the ‘boy who never grew up’, in one of the country’s other famous parks, Kensington Gardens.
Go see it. All you need is some friends or family, a picnic and your imagination!
