Collecting bikes from the South Pier cycle hire station in Blackpool was very easy once we’d registered and with a firm tug we released our trusty bikes from the automated racks and headed off along the promenade. The new wide open spaces created along the promenade are great for cyclists creating plenty of room for everyone (including the donkeys when the tide was in) and we were soon zipping along with the wind in our hair.
The large, padded seats and sit up style of bike made for a very comfy ride together with simple gears and a basket in front which proved very handy for carrying our bags. All the bikes are named (we hired Dan and Kip) presumably so that regulars can seek out for their favourites and I have to say I became very attached to Kip during our three hour ride together.
What most impressed us was how quickly the landscape changed from the buzz and activity of the Golden Mile to a very tranquil, almost empty promenade just north of the cenotaph – and the views all the way were fantastic!
