Nestling in the heart of Lancashire just off the A59 in the delightful village of Mellor, this 2 AA star hotel is a real delight. The Millstone is known as the ‘baby’ of the Shire hotels family, but its food is certainly ‘grown up’.
The home cooked menu featured the finest that the Red Rose County has to offer, serving Lancashire’s most popular dishes at 2 AA Rosette quality. Sunday lunch in the traditional oak, panelled restaurant dining next to a cosy fire was definitely appreciated on a winter’s day by my wife and I.
Having been shown to our table from the Millers Bar where we had had an aperitif by polite and courteous staff we sat down to our appetisers of baked Ribblesdale goats cheese on a buttered crumpet with red onion marmalade and oak smoked salmon with capers and shallot vinaigrette and served with granary bread.
The service throughout the meal was first class; so we were soon presented with our main course of Roast Sirloin of Bowland Beef cooked to perfection with Yorkshire Pudding, horseradish sauce, seasonal vegetables and roast potatoes with rich gravy.
Unfortunately, we could not manage one of the splendid desserts or the brilliant selection of Lancashire cheeses ranging from Inglewhites Sheep’s cheese to Blackstick Blue and not forgetting Mrs Kirkham’s mild and crumbly cheese as we were both completely satisfied with just two courses.
The whole dining experience was one not to be missed and the only downside of the afternoon was the drive home to Yorkshire in the snow for my wife.

I have been here quite a few times and can say the food is delightful. We try and go once a month and make it a day out.

I went to the Millstone with some ex colleagues a few months ago for the Hot Shots evening and they were so impressesd with the food that they said they would be back again soon with their partners, even though for each it would mean nearly a 50 mile round trip!

I love the food at The Millstone. I take my Yorkshire family members there...a lot!! Our fav's are the amazing fish and chips (still no.1 on my partner's fish and chip chart) and the delish Sunday Roast. Yum! We've never actually eaten in the restaurant, just the bar area which never fails to impress.
