On Friday morning Sally and I went to visit WWT Martin Mere for the launch of their brand new attraction, Canoe Safari.
First of all we learnt about all of the new exciting developments that have and will be taking place over the next 12 months at WWT Martin Mere. As well as the Canoe Safari, their new Mereside Cafe has recently opened offering hot and cold food.
A brand new woodland play area, a den building area, kiosk and England's first composting toilets will also be opening within the next month. Then by next Easter they will also have an adventure area with climbing walls.
Anyway back to the canoes.
The sun was shining down as we were lead past the otters, flamingos and beavers to the 2.4 hectares of new reed bed, wet woodland and wet grassland (swamp) were we given instructions and then climbed aboard our Canadian style canoe.
Off we went, gliding through the water, to say gracefully maybe a little lie. We didn't fall in or anything we just found it a little tricky to manoeuvre around some of the corners very smoothly. But that was definitely part of the fun.
We soon learnt to go with the flow and float along with the ducklings swimming on by.There are several channels allowing you to explore the wetlands at your own pace and take which ever direction you like, which is great.
We had lots of fun and think it's a great way of making bird watching fun for all ages. It could even get some smiles off those grumpy teenagers.
What is also great is the cost as it is only £5 per canoe and the Safari takes around 40 minutes.
The Canoe Safari opens today for the start of the Easter holidays, so if you are looking for something to do with the family this should be on your list of things to do.
