It wouldn’t be summer without a trip to the seaside and what could be more quintessentially British than a beach hut overlooking the expansive sandy beach at St Annes.
We arrived just after 10am (after a welcoming text from Stuart, the owner) to find our lovely beach hut ready and waiting for us. We put the kettle on, opened the doors and made ourselves at home in what became our home for the day.
A comfy seating area, moveable table and plenty of deck chairs made our base very cosy – with the added convenience of the fridge, microwave, DAB radio, plates, glasses and cutlery – we were short of nothing. We’d brought a picnic for our lunch with plenty of yummy cream cakes (picked up at Barton Grange Garden Centre on route) and a bottle of bubbly so the fridge was well stocked for the day.
With a 18 month old toddler in tow we had many trips down on to the sand for sandcastle building and ball games (N.B. - the sand is the perfect consistency for sandcastle building, or so I’m told) and the safe, flat prom in front of our hut gave us lots of space to play and push the buggy . We also enjoyed watching our fellow beach hut residents flying kites and riding their bikes. The age range in our group alone ranged from 18 months to 62 years – and there was certainly a mix of age groups in the other huts – perhaps proof that hiring a beach hut is a fun experience for all ages.
The view from our beach hut was one of the best parts of the experience from the changing tide and watching walkers turn into dots as they headed out to the distance (we thought about 2 miles away??) to seeing yachts head out of the estuary, the view from our hut was continually stunning. And I have to mention how lovely and friendly everyone was (both fellow beach hut residents and all the pleasant Lancashire folk walking past) – it really made our day.
We finished off eating fish and chips whilst watching the sun go down and headed home shortly after, although you can stay till midnight if so inclined as there are lights in the hut as well.
At this point I’ll mention that the weather was on the damp side – but it really didn’t affect our day in the slightest, in fact we probably used the facilities beach hut more because of the weather.
We can’t wait to go again.....
Sally
