I had been looking forward to seeing Mamma Mia! for months. I’ve seen many West End and Broadway shows but never been lucky enough to see Mamma Mia! so when I heard its International Tour was starting in Blackpool at the Winter Gardens (20 June – 1 Sept) I quickly booked tickets with a couple of friends.
It always amazes me every time I go into the Winter Gardens just what a stunning venue it is with so much choice and flexibility as well as an abundance of history that is special to Blackpool. There was a real mix in the crowd from couples and children but the majority naturally being groups of females.
We took our seats and the introduction from the orchestra got our dancing feet tapping along to the start of over an hour of ABBA’s greatest hits that took us to the first interval. As the main actors took their positions on stage, you could hear “I know him....he’s been in Coronation Street hasn’t he?” to “what an amazing voice”. The crowd were soon clapping away and singing along and you really felt yourself getting immersed into the story, so much so that it was a surprise when the interval came.
We enjoyed a leis
urely drink in the Spanish Bar for about 15 minutes and then we were back in for the remaining part of the show. Again it was about an hour of superb acting, singing and dancing. We were literally crying with laughter at some scenes particularly with Sue Devaney who plays Rosie, one of the key characters. As the wedding scene was in full flow it was amazing to look around and see the audience smiling. Then for the finale we were all on our feet singing and dancing away to Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia! followed by rapturous applause and cheering to what was truly a superb show. With the audience still smiling on their way out of the theatre, Mamma Mia really is a feel good show and leaves you singing away to Super Trouper and Fernando for days after.
If you get the opportunity I really recommend you see this brilliant, uplifting, West End smash hit –in Lancashire. We’re lucky that the show is here in Blackpool – the only summer season of Mamma Mia! in the UK - and sell out crowds will mean more West End shows like this coming here again and again.
Here I go again, how can I resist it...back next week but this time with my Mum – once is not enough!
