It’s not often you see something so completely original and fresh at the theatre that you don’t know how to describe it, but that’s how it feels after seeing the brand new show, BLAM! at the Grand Theatre in Blackpool last night.
Let’s face it, the majority of theatre is aimed at a stereo-typical and largely female audience – so how refreshing it was to see physical theatre with both boyish humour and sophistication.
So how do I describe BLAM? - Four physically adept actors, an office set, and an incredibly vivid imagination is probably a good starting point. Office politics and boredom take on a new level as the action escalates from flicking paperclips to films re-enactments complete with Bruce Willis shoot-outs, Rambo fights and matrix style slow-motion battles. My favourite bits include a clever take on a card game (played with post-it notes), an ET moment with a water cooler and where one of the ‘office workers’ swings, trapeze style, from the strip lighting.
As the blurb says “If you’ve ever sat at work or in a classroom watching the clock and willing it to move, this is the show for you.” And there was certainly plenty of laughs coming from the audience.
BLAM is great fun, bursting with energy and is so completely different that you need see it to believe it.
