Got kids of multiple ages to entertain? The weather’s not so great? Then I heartily recommend a trip to The Blackpool Tower Circus for 2+ hours of dare devil feats, family fun and general amazement, not forgetting oodles of popcorn, flashy lights and Mooky the clown.
The circus (and indeed the tower itself) might well be celebrating its 120th birthday this year but with acts that include a thrilling wall of death (three motorbikes powering around a tight sphere), tightrope antics and flip-tastic acrobatics it mixes the nostalgia of the traditional circus with a modern appetite for electrifying entertainment.
As ‘Mooky goes to Hollywood’ is the theme this year, all the acts incorporated film soundtracks (from a live band) and costumes into the show. Dancing girls and Mooky the clown entertained the crowds in between the acts and there was time during the interval to go into the ring to have your face painted like a clown.
The circus arena is still the Victorian masterpiece it was designed to be (FYI it’s the oldest permanent circus arena in the world) and you can see how the legs of the tower have been incorporate into the design. The arena's unique design features a hydraulic floor which sinks and fills with 42,000 gallons of water in less than a minute – producing a spectacular finale finish!
We had a great afternoon and came away very impressed by the acts. I’d recommend getting in early to ensure you get good seats during peak times as it did fill up quickly.
