With 354 recorded bird species, native mammals such as red deer and otters, and millions of creepy crawlies that include tiger moths and common lizards, Lancashire’s wilder side offers up some great days out.
This year we’ve got a few new attractions to help you enjoy Lancashire’s wildlife even more
Hide & Seek
Forget dark and draft prone bird hides, the brand new hide (opening soon) at Brockholes nature reserve near Preston gives a 21st Century spin to these often intimidating spaces. With floor to ceiling glass visitors of all ages can see the birdlife on No 1 Pit Lake and the new Sand Martin wall. The pit lake is home to different species of native and migrant birds. Look out for the little ringed plover, a species protected by law, which nests on the ground and can be very difficult to see. Special offer - Visit before the end of April, spend £25 in the restaurant and you'll get your parking for free
Reserve with a View
New for 2015 the RSPB Leighton Moss and Morecambe Bay Nature Reserve’s brand new Skytower provides 9 metre high high viewing platform giving visitors elevated views across the reserve and Bay area. Top tips for Spring - look out for the spectacular sky dance of our marsh harriers and take a stroll through the reeds listening for the 'booming' bittern. Download a free Morecambe Bay wildlife guide to get you started.
Walk on the Wild side
Opened late last year, the new Wild Walk at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre, Burscough, takes you on an exciting journey through muddy meadow, wet woods and reedy routes. Aimed at younger visitors, this new walk takes you to ‘wild’ areas of the reserve that have previously only been accessed by the wildlife itself. Don’t forget your wellies! WWT Martin Mere is also celebrating its 40th anniversary this year so look out for events throughout the year.
