Planning days out and holidays when you’ve got children to entertain can be one of the biggest challenges for families. Especially when your little darlings have oodles of energy to burn off and the threatening cry of ‘I’m bored!’ is never far away. Let them walk on the wild side this summer with these Lancashire attractions.
Brockholes
The fact that Brockholes calls itself an ‘unreserved’ nature reserve, sets the scene for this covers 250 acre reserve just off J31 of the M6, featuring countless trails and hides to explore. As you’d expect of a nature reserve there’s plenty of open space and wildlife to see, but there’s also a large adventure playground, good café and during the summer holidays look out for craft sessions, seasonal trails, open-air theatre and family events which will test your tracking and den-building skills. Did we also mention that entrance to Brockholes is free?
With animals that range from a snake to a shire horse, you’ll get to meet, stroke and feed a whole host of different animals at Greenlands Farm near Carnforth. Say hello to Alice the giant rabbit, enjoy a donkey ride, feed the lambs, play on the tractors and new go-karts, let off steam in the straw barn and try the new climbing wall. And if that isn’t enough you can also take a hike through the surrounding paddocks.
World Horse Welfare Penny Farm
This horse rescue & rehabilitation centre just outside Blackpool is open to the public (with free admission) three days a week giving you chance to meet the 65 ponies and horses that live at the centre. Regular events and open days also give you the chance to try your hand at grooming and to see the animals in action. For those with energy to burn choose from two activity trails around the farm’s fields and paddocks named ‘Dales Trails’ after one of Penny Farm’s most popular residents.
SEA LIFE Blackpool
SEA LIFE’s underwater adventure features over 2,000 aquatic creatures including tropical sharks, colourful reef fish, turtles, rays and sea horses right on Blackpool’s promenade. The Snorkling with Sharks experience will bring you face to fin with over 20 sharks including Blacktip Reef Sharks and a Guitar Shovelnose Shark (min height for snorkelers is 1.3 meters) within the main Ocean tank. But don’t worry, the less brave can still hold a crab or touch a star fish in the Rockpool experience, and there’s even a soft play area for very young. Our tip is to book online to save 20% on admission costs.
Go Ape Rivington
This attraction might not involve actual animals but it gives you and your kids the perfect excuse to behave like monkeys in the woods around Rivington Pike and is suitable for all ages over 10. Sky walks, a 200 metre long zip wire and lots more slightly scary tree top activities. Plus you can get 15% off per person at Go Ape Rivington using promotional code VLANGA so there’s no excuse for not unleashing your inner Ape this summer!
