I rushed away from work on Friday to get up to Holgates Caravan Park with some friends for the weekend. A great haven courtesy of my parents who have a caravan (more like cool crash pad) there. First thing on the menu was food and wine so a quick stop at Booths in Carnforth saw me stocking up on Morecambe Bay Shrimps and crusty bread (starters), Bowland beef with all the trimmings (main) and a selection of great Lancashire cheeses for if we made it through the rest (which we did).
Having gained a few pounds we tried to walk them off through the wind and rain on Saturday but ended up deciding to have a trip to Kirkby Lonsdale to go to The Highwayman pub for lunch. What can I say! It amazes me how good it is every single time I go. This time I managed to stray from Hotpot and had the brilliant fish pie. If only every pub did this simple, quality, incredible, local and traditional fodder at a price not out of stretch. Enough accolade for now - I'm getting hungry again. Needless to say though I'm so proud to be promoting food like this through Taste Lancashire. 2008 is going to be a tastetastic year.
On the subject of Lancashire cheeses ... they also make absolutely fantastic macaroni.
