To celebrate the joyous occasion that is National Cream Tea Day here’s a few places in Lancashire where you can get your fix of scones, cream, jam… and all the other treats that make up the veritable treat that is afternoon tea. The only difficult decision is deciding whether to put the cream or the jam on first…..
1. The Midland Hotel, Morecambe
Beautiful views across Morecambe Bay and a fabulous art deco afternoon tea experience. Three tiered selection of Victoria sponge, fruit tartlets, scones and delicate finger sandwiches. Choose from a variety of infused teas, or for more decadence, a glass of champagne.
Sample afternoon tea at the stylish and sophisticated Northcote with views of the garden and distant hills of the beautiful Ribble Valley. Tuck into a selection of sandwiches alongside almond cake, caramelised lemon tart, valrhona chocolate ganache & nut slice and freshly baked scone with homemade strawberry jam and organic clotted cream.
3. The Blackpool Tower Ballroom
Whether you want to be spun around by your partner or you just want to watch the world dance by, what better way to relax than by enjoying Afternoon Tea while listening to the sounds of the Tower’s famous Wurtlitzer Organ. Afternoon tea includes sandwiches, cream scones with clotted cream and jam plus a choice of cake from the daily selection with a freshly brewed pot of tea or coffee
4. Brockholes, Preston
For something slightly different try the brand new afternoon picnic tea now being served at Brockholes Nature Reserve. Sandwiches, savoury muffins & pastries sit alongside home baked scones, cheesecakes, Victoria sponge and traditional cloudy lemonade.
5. Lavender Tea Room at Ribby Hall Village, Wrea Green
Enjoy a delicious afternoon tea served on a classic two-tier cake stand or cream tea served with a large homemade scone, clotted cream a choice of handmade jam and a choice of Tea or Coffee, or glass of wine.
6. Samlesbury Hall, near Preston
Built in 1325, steeped in fascinating history and retaining its original typical black and white exterior Samlesbury Hall is a suitably traditional setting to enjoy afternoon tea. Delight in scrumptious bite size butties, a savoury nibble, and a trio of three freshly made puddings including a mini fruit scone with clotted cream & jam, and plenty of tea or coffee.
7. East Lancashire Railway, Bury - Rawtenstall
An exceptionally stylish picnic experience on board the opulent Pullman style carriages of the East Lancashire Railway. This ultimate afternoon treat combines an hour and a half steam journey through the pretty Irwell Valley along with freshly made sandwiches, copious amounts of tea and coffee and scones and cakes.
8. Rufford Old Hall, Rufford nr Ormskirk
Built in 1530s and one of Lancashire's finest Tudor buildings, Rufford Old Hall is said to be have been visited by Shakespeare (although we can’t vouch as to whether or not he enjoyed afternoon tea). Choose from a Lancashire afternoon tea with savoury scones and Lancashire cheese or go for traditional fruit scones with toppings.
9. Best Western Glendower, Lytham St Annes
Right on the promenade at Lytham St Annes the Glendower serves up dainty sandwiches, homemade scones and others treats. Make it special by opting for a glass or two of Bucks Fizz or Prosecco.
10. Gibbon Bridge Hotel, Chipping
For afternoon tea in the beautiful Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, stop off at the Gibbon Bridge Hotel near Chipping. Afternoon tea includes a pot of tea, sandwiches, scones, cream & lemon cheese, cakes and champagne. Looked out for their musical themed afternoon teas.
